The Vatican, or the Holy See, is the seat of the Bishop of Rome or the Holy Father. It is the principal episcopal see of the Catholic Church which dates back to early Christianity, and today is a sovereign state governed by international law. Since 1929 it has maintained diplomatic, temporal and spiritual independence from Italy through the Lateran Treaty.
