Access to the Diocesan Archive

Visits

Diocesan personnel and external researchers are normally welcome to consult the documents in the Archive. However, the Archive is temporarily closed to visitors as the archive is being moved to a new, purpose-built archive store. Normal open hours are Tuesdays from 8.30-5.00 (please be aware that you may be asked to leave over lunchtime). Visits are by prior arrangement only; please contact the Diocesan Archivist to arrange a visit.

All readers must register and complete an Archive User Agreement form before being granted access to the archive material. External researchers must also show some identification on their first visit.

While Covid restrictions remain in place, as a further condition of access, researchers are required to wear a mask at all times while in the building, and to wash their hands on entry and exit to the Diocesan Archives.

Catalogue

The Archive is currently being catalogued. While this is being prepared, the Archivist is able to send copies of the list of archive contents and the list of rare books held by the Archive on request.

Enquiries

The Diocesan Archivist is happy to respond to enquiries. However, it is not possible for her to undertake detailed research on your behalf. In these incidences, enquirers are invited to visit the Archive or to arrange for someone to undertake research on their behalf. Please note that the Diocesan Archivist only works on Monday and Tuesdays so allow five working days for a response to emails.
